Materials & Care
Every piece in the shop is made by hand, one at a time, from materials chosen for that particular piece. This page explains what goes into each type of work and how to look after it. Individual listings note the specific fabrics, stones, or glass used, along with anything particular to that piece.
Quilts, Wall Art, Table Runners & Placemats
Materials
Quilt tops and backings are 100% cotton, with cotton flannel used on some pieces for softness and warmth. Trims vary by piece — cotton binding on most, cotton lace on others.
Batting differs depending on what the piece is meant to do. Most quilts and wall hangings use cotton batting, which drapes softly and washes well. Placemats and a few smaller pieces use polyester batting, which holds its loft and resists flattening under a plate or a vase. A few lightweight pieces have no batting at all. Each listing states which.
Care
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water, with no bleach
- Tumble dry low, or dry flat — do not hang while wet, as the weight of the water pulls the stitching out of shape
- Iron on low to medium as needed
- Placemats and table runners need ironing after every wash to restore their flat finish
- For wall hangings, hang out of direct sunlight — prolonged sun will fade cotton over time
Washed gently and dried flat, a cotton quilt will outlast the person who bought it. Hot water, high heat, and bleach are what shorten a quilt's life.
Fabric Bookmarks
Materials
Cotton fabric with a craft elastic band that holds your place without creasing or damaging the page. Depending on the style, the bookmark has either a stitched cotton pocket or a clip to hold a pen or pencil. A pen is included.
Care
- Remove the pen before cleaning
- Spot clean with a damp cloth
- Lay flat to dry
Fused Glass
Materials
Art glass, cut and layered by hand, then fused in a kiln at high temperature. Dishes are built from two layers of glass. Many pieces include dichroic glass — a specialty glass with an extremely thin metallic coating that shifts color depending on the angle and the light. Dishes are finished with non-slip silicone pad feet. Pendants hang on sterling silver chains.
Care
- Dishwasher safe
- Not microwave safe. On dichroic pieces, the coating is metallic and must never go in a microwave. Pieces without dichroic glass should also be kept out of the microwave
- Not for oven or stovetop use, and avoid sudden temperature changes — fused glass can crack under thermal shock
- Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth
- Like any glassware, these pieces can chip or break if dropped on a hard surface
Pendants
- Remove before swimming, showering, or exercising
- Avoid contact with perfume, lotion, and hairspray
- Polish the chain with a soft, dry cloth; wipe the glass with a damp cloth
- Store in a soft pouch or jewelry box
Bead Jewelry
Materials
Genuine semi-precious stone beads, strung on stretch elastic cord so the bracelet slips on without a clasp. Matching earrings hang on hypoallergenic ear hooks, suitable for sensitive ears. Stones and bead sizes are listed on each product page, and sets are made in a range of wrist sizes.
Care
- Remove before swimming, showering, or exercising — moisture and chlorine dull the stones and weaken the elastic cord
- Avoid contact with perfume, lotion, and hairspray
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing
- Roll the bracelet on and off rather than pulling it wide, which is what wears elastic out
- Store in a soft pouch or jewelry box, out of direct sunlight
